"Free" edition limitations 9 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Let me start by saying that I understand that Modelio are in the business of selling software and not just giving it away. So far I am quite impressed with what I can do with the "Free" version. However one restriction in the "Free" version that really does frustrate me is the fact that you cannot upgrade/open models created by earlier versions. I have just gone from 1.0.1 to 1.1 and luckily chose to leave my old version in place.

I really think the name Free is a misnoma, it should be trial or something like that. The fact that I cannot upgrade to the latest version and take my work with me really means that I am stuck with either buying the non-free edition or sticking to the buggy version I have.

This is clearly not free software in the Linux sense of the word. It is a good product but it is a trial product and that would have been a more honest description.

Since I wrote that above I've found this http://www.modeliosoft.com/en/products/product-range/105.html page that suggests it should be possible to upgrade (see the other section right at the bottom. So perhaps this is a bug in the 1.1 or 1.0.1 version.

OK I was contacted by support and they offered me a way to work around this problem. I have still to see if I will be able to upgrade but I am quite confident. This certainly does improve the situation a great deal.

Hi,

Let's not call it a bug, but clearly, this limitation was not the best choice.

The next version of Modelio Free Edition will authorize upgrade.
It will allow you to open project developed with earlier versions.

Regarding your project, it was successfully migrated and returned to you this morning.

Best regards

Thanks for performing the upgrade and I can confirm that the project is now open in 1.1.

The reason I called it a bug was because the feature list clearly states that it should be possible but actually without the kind intervention of yourselves this would not have been possible. But yes it's really a "does not work as specified" rather than an actual bug.

I am delighted to hear that this is the last time I should encounter this problem.
